Implant Considerations

When researching breast augmentation, there are several factors you should consider, including incision locations, implant size, implant shape, implant material and implant position. During your consultation, Dr. Lennox will take the time to understand your goals and explain all options so you can make an informed decision.

Size

One of the most important decisions you will need to make is choosing the size of your breast implants. Vancouver women have a wide range of preferences when it comes to breast size, but most women desire natural-looking breasts that complement their overall figure. Dr. Lennox's staff helps make the decision easier with sizers, a surgical bra that allows you to visualize different implant sizes to ensure you get the look you want. You can even take the sizers home to get opinions from your friends and family.

Silicone or Saline

Dr. Lennox was one of the first physicians in Canada to begin using the new generation of silicone gel implants, which many women believe have a more natural look and feel than saline. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water and their advantages include that they generally cost less and require smaller incisions.

Position

Breast implants can be placed beneath the chest muscle or breast tissue. Placing the implants under the muscle generally provides a more natural appearance, reduces the risk that you will experience tightening around the implant after surgery (capsular contracture) and creates less interference with mammograms. Placing the implants under the breast tissue allows for an easier recovery because there is no incision into the muscle.

Incision Method

Incisions can be made along the bottom of the areola (the pigmented skin around the nipple), just below the breast where it meets the chest wall, or through the armpit. The type and size of your implants as well as your body type affect which method is best for you. Regardless, Dr. Lennox's goal is to makes scars as subtle as possible.

Recovery & Results

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure so you'll be able to go home after the anesthesia has worn off. Most patients feel some discomfort, but this is easily managed with pain medication and subsides within a few days. About a week later, you'll return to Dr. Lennox's office for reassessment.. As with any surgery, your body will need time to heal but following your aftercare instructions closely is the key to a good recovery.

You'll be able to enjoy the new, shapelier you immediately although final results appear gradually over time as swelling subsides and the breast implants settle into place. Incision lines continue to fade for up to a year.
